Preparation and Properties of Ramie/PLA Co-wrapped Yarns Thermoplastic Composite
In this research, PLA/hemp co-wrapped yarns which are produced by wrapping PLA filaments around the core ramie yarns are used to fabricate the plain woven fabric, and the composites are made by hot compression molding of plain woven fabric layers prepregs. The mechanical properties are characterized regarding mechanical strength and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Mechanical tests shows that the tensile and bending strengths of the composites markedly increased compared with the neat PLA matrix, reaching 67.67 and 56.73 MPa, which is approximately 2.3 and 1.9 times higher than neat PLA.The fractured surfaces are investigated by scanning electron microscopy to study the fiber/matrix interface.Testing result illustrates that the adhesion between the matrix and the yarns improved in a certain degree, however, in some areas the yarns and matrix do not adhere to each other adequately enough, showing little imprints of fibers on the matrix, there are also gaps between the fibers and the PLA.
