Using Bias Extension Test to Determine the In-plane Shear Rigidity Modulus for Glass Warp Knitted Non-Crimp Fabrics

According to the increasing use of textiles in composite materials, a better understanding of their mechanical behavior becomes a necessity for better simulation of forming process before manufacturing as well as for other applications. In this paper, the in-plane shear rigidity modulus of Glass Warp Knitted Non-Crimp Fabrics (WKNCFs) was experimentally investigated by using the data of uniaxial bias extension (UBE) test. Two commercially available fabrics of WKNCFs have been tested at low speed (static condition).Force-displacement curves were recorded from a universal testing machine. The relation between normalized shear force and shear angle was approximated to a polynomial function by fifth degree, then the shear stress function was calculated. The derivation of stress equations delivered the in-plane modulus of shear rigidity as a function to shear angle. The influence of the fabric structure on the rigidity was also presented.
