Distributions of heavy metals in mangrove surface sediments from south coast of China
Mangrove ecosystems are coastal estuarine systems confined to the tropical and subtropical regions. However, there are no published data for heavy metals present in its sediments and the relationship with anthropogenic disturbance in south coast of China.Distributions and potential ecological risk of heavy metals in mangrove surface sediments covering seven different sites of south coast of China was studied in this paper. The concentration of heavy metals Cr, Cu, As, Cd,Cu, Zn, Pb and Hg in surface sediment samples of the mangrove were detected by ICP-MS.In addition, contamination factor, geo-accumulation index, enrichment factor and pollution load index were calculated to evaluate the heavy metals pollution status. The results show that heavy metal levels were closely associated with local economic development.
