Inhibition of sulfide on nitrification in wastewater treatment plant
Sulfide, produced in leather industry, petroleum industry and urban drainage system, could enter nitrifying reactor and reduce effluent quality of wastewater treatment plant. However, the detail and mechanism of sulfide inhibition on nitrification are poorly understand. Here in this study, the inhibition effect of sulfide on ammonia oxidization and nitrite oxidization were assessed with activated sludge uncultivated under high ammonia loading when being exposed to different initial sulfide concentration.Compared with ammonia oxidation, nitrite oxidation was much more inhibited by sulfide. It was also indicated that molecular H2S was the main inhibitor instead of SH- or S2-.Additionally, formation of sulfate in aeration process was much slower than oxidization of sulfide, suggesting that there are other forms of sulfide exists during nitrification and could play the role of inhibition. Finally, it was found that aeration intensification and Fe2+ addition could not eliminate sulfide inhibition but this result was a supporting evidence that inhibition of sulfide on nitrification was no-competitive and H2S was main inhibitor.
