The immersion mode ice nucleation efficiency of fine urban aerosols in the atmosphere of Beijing, China
Heterogeneous ice nucleation is one of the most important processes in mix-phase cloud.Currently, four pathways have been identified to account for the heterogeneous ice formation in mixed-phase clouds among which immersion mode has been considered as a dominant mode.It has been confirmed that ice nucleation can be modulated by aerosol emissions resulting a significant impact on the global radiative balance.Particularly, larger mass concentration and more complicated chemical compositions of urban aerosols in heavily polluted cities might induce highly uncertainties in the chemical and physical processes involved in ice nucleation. In order to better understand the ice nuclei in the urban atmosphere, we detected the immersion mode ice nucleation efficiency of PM2.5 collected in the atmosphere of Beijing in winter using an optical freezing apparatus. In our presentation, the ice nucleation efficiency of PM2.5 and its link to the chemical composition and air pollution levels will be presented.
