Maximizing ecological services value of abandoned mine land using integrated simulation models

Large scale mining has resulted in great numbers of Abandoned Mine Land (AML).Transforming AML into other land use categories (i.e., forest land or cultivated land) and achieving higher Ecological Services Value (ESV) have become a hot issue for the ecologically sustainable development in destroyed mining regions. This paper combined the Linear Programming model and the Conversion of Land Use and Its Effects at Small Region Extent (CLUE-S) model to simulate AML shift in the Mentougou District in Beijing, China in 2020, which aims at realizing maximal ESV in post-mining landscape. The Linear Programming model was concerned with optimizing the demands for land-use categories, while the CLUE-S model translated these demands into spatial location of land use conversions. The results showed AML was mainly converted into forest, thus maintaining greater ecological service function. This studys findings offer an approach to simulate AML dynamics and provide rehabilitation suggestions for decision makers.
