Nitritation and Denitritation Performance at Pilot-Scale Two-stage Sideline Treatment of Anaerobic Reject Water
Nitritation and denitritation processes were employed to remove ammonium nitrogen at two-stage sequential batch reactor (SBR) system from anaerobic reject water (ARW).Lipid content of ARW interacted during nitritation as volatile fatty acid production via beta-oxidation and consumed bicarbonate limiting full nitritation of ammonium nitrogen.VFA produced were removed via denitrifiers only at a limited degree and activity loss in the anoxic SBR was eliminated by periodic activated sludge addition which enabled complete denitritation.Temperature elevation to 30-35 ℃ improved denitritation activity more efficiently where short hydraulic retention time (HRT) values (1-2 d) were sufficient to remove over 90% of total nitrogen.
