Anaerobic Biodegradability and Dewaterability of Sewage Sludge Fractions:Potential for Separate Anaerobic Stabilization in Sequential Batch Reactors

Anaerobic sequential batch study was conducted on primary (PS), secondary (waste biological sludge (WBS)) and mixed sewage (MS) sludges and different characteristics fortheir digestion performance and dewaterability were reported in this paper. As raw sludge properties, PS showed a high volatile solid (VS) content and no dewaterability, whereasWBS had a high settling ability but a lower VS concentration.Regarding to degradability, biogas production and VS removal were lowest for WBS indicating that low hydraulic retention time (HRT) would be suitable for separate thickening and anaerobic digestion of WBS.PS needed no thickening but higher HRT to effectively produce biogas and remove VS.Its dewaterability increased during anaerobic digestion.A model for separate stabilization was suggested for the current sewage sludge line.
