Fabrication and Mechanical Properties of Carbon Nanotube Film Twisted Yarn with different structures

  In this paper, carbon nanotube (CNT) films with different widths are twisted into CNT film twisted yarns with various twist per meter (TPM) by the automatic twisting device with tension control system.The surface morphology and mechanical properties of the CNT film twisted yarns are systematically characterized and analyzed by a polarizing microscope and single fiber strength tester.The effects of film width and TPM on the mechanical properties of CNT film twisted yarns are discussed.The results showed that the structure of the low-twist yarns is more loose and uneven, while that of the high-twist yarns is compact and uniform.With the increase of film width from 1 to 7 mm, diameter and mechanical strength of film twisted yarn significantly increased.Similarly, with the increase of TPM from 300 to 900, its mechanical strength also enhanced, especially compared to untwisted CNT film.In addition, due to the adjustable yarn fineness and excellent flexibility, CNT film twisted yarns can be used for weaving textiles and the smart components of textiles.
