Enhanced Mechanical Strength of the Cryogenic Treated Carbon Nanotube Fiber in Acetone Solution

Carbon nanotube fibers (CNTFs) have received much attention for their promising applications. Many methods have been developed to improve mechanical and electrical properties of CNTFs.In this study, we report a new method to enhance the mechanical properties of the aerogel-spun CNT fibers by combined acetone infiltration and cryogenic treatment. The morphology and fracture surface were observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy to investigate the change of microstructure and fracture mode of CNTFs.The results showed that the average strength and modulus of the CNTFs were significantly improved by 24.78% and 30.75% by combined acetone infiltration and cryogenic treatment compared to the original CNT yarns, respectively. The SEM images identified that CNT bundles of the most strengthened CNTFs were compacted together and generated CNT bundle packages. The current technique has the advantage that the mechanical properties of CNTFs can be enhanced by simply physical treatments without the decrease of tenacity.
