Preparation of Hydrophobic Silica Aerogels and Its Application in Cotton Fabrics

  The bulk hydrophobic SiO2 aerogels were prepared by sol-gel method and drying under atmospheric pressure using methyl trimethoxysilane as precursors, methanol as solvent, oxalic acid and ammonia as acid-base catalysts.The effect of different conditions on the gel time and density was investigated.The results showed that when the molar ratio of MTMS to methanol was 1∶24 and pH=8, the gel time of SiO2 aerogels was 29h, and the density was 120kg/m3.FTIR and contact angle showed that the surface of the aerogels had a large amount of hydrophobic group methyl, and the contact angle was 151.0 °, which was superhydrophobic.TG showed that: the aerogels has a good heat resistance.SEM showed that the prepared SiO2 aerogels had a three-dimensional network of continuous porous structure, and the particle size was about 2 μm.The contact angle of cotton,which treated by mixture of SiO2 aerogels and Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS),was 155 °, showing super-hydrophobicity.SEM of cotton fabric showed that a large amount of SiO2 aerogels particles were loaded on the surface of cotton fabric,which were treated by PDMS/SiO2 aerogesl, and the surface roughness was improved.
