The History of English Pattern Drawing Compasses in Japan
This paper summarized the history of compasses in modern Japan based on the collection of one of the authors and relating documents. The compass for technical drawing has two principal functions: to set a length same to the one assigned in a different part of a drawing and to draw a circle or an arc.In Japan, it is said that circles in the painting on the ceiling of KITORA tumulus were drawn by use of an ancient compass. It is also suggested that KATSUSHIKA Hokusai used a compass. The oldest existing compass in Japan is introduced in the old engineering document SOKUENYOUKI no MAKI.Such compasses were classified into two types: BUNMAWASHI that consists of a rotating axis and an arm specialized to draw a circle and an arc, and the two arm type with two plates hinged each other resembling a divider.
