Development History of Ramie Textile Technology in Ancient China

　　Ramie, the true ramie or China grass, also called Chinese plant or white ramie, is one of the oldest known and bast fibers.It is of great importance as the foundation of Chinas textile civilization which was laid down with the use of ramie.The time scale of ramie technology in ancient china can be divided into three periods.Evidences obtained from relics of the Neolithic period showed that the technology of textile was in use more than 6 000 years ago.However, the raw ramie was used to twist into ropes or fishing nets without any concept of degumming before 2100 B.C (Xia dynasty).From 2100 B.C to 1870, starting from Shang dynasty, the relevant technology development was carried out that ranged from cutting, peeling, degumming,sunning, bleaching, reeling and finally to weaving the ramie fabrics.From 1870 onwards to present, after the industrial revolution, enormous advancements in technology have been achieved.Therefore, this research focuses on the development of ramie technology during 2100 B.C.to 1870 A.D.
