Desizing Effect on Mechanical Properties of Ramie Fabric/Poly (Lactic Acid) Composites

Natural cellulose fiber fabric reinforced biopolymer composites have attracted increasing attention due to environmental concerns. However, the size agents on the yarns would have influence on the interfacial adhesion of yarns with matrix, limiting their composite mechanical properties. This study investigates the desizing effect of on the mechanical performance of ramie/poly (lactic acid) laminated composites. The results show that the tensile failure load of the desized fabrics has decreased by 14%.However, the tensile strength and flexural modulus of the desized fabric reinforcing composites have improved significantly by 15% and 23%,respectively.No obvious change has been found in tensile modulus and flexural strength of desized ramie fabric reinforced composites. With the removal of yarn sizes, the interfacial adhesion between the ramie yarns and PLA matrix could improve with more cellulose fibers floating out the yarns.
