Surface Modification of Flaxseed Fiber Bundles for Composite Materials

Natural fiber reinforced composite materials (NFRC) have been the prime area of research due to worldwide environmental law reforms and consumer awareness shift towards sustainable substitutes for the conventional materials.Hence, exploration of various underutilized agricultural crop wastes as the new potential resource is vital.Flaxseed plants can become abundant source of fibers for NFRC.Surface modification of flaxseed fiber bundles was performed with 10 g/L and 20 g/L Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) solutions. The composites were fabricated by compression molding with Polybutylene Succinate (PBS) as a matrix and their tensile strengths were subsequently analyzed and compared.SEM analysis was adopted to investigate the surface morphology of composites. The alkali treatment resulted in improved surface roughness of the fiber bundles with better matrix penetration and wetting of fiber bundles.Evaluation of the tensile property revealed acceptable results. The results revealed significant improvements in the surface roughness of fiber bundles as well as fiber-matrix interface after alkali treatments.Hence, this study established the potential of flaxseed fiber bundles as a valuable reinforcement resource and the fundamental data for their possible applications in non-conventional textile applications, especially in NFRC materials with comparable and acceptable properties.
