Reinforcement of Recycled Waste PET Plastic with Sisal Fiber
The norms nowadays is that nearly all the domestic packaging is done with the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics bottles which has led to rapid increase in the production of waste PET bottles. These waste ends up in the landfills thus polluting the environment. To diminish this predicament, the waste PET bottles can be burned, reused or recycled into other products.Burning causes emission of toxic fumes while due to contaminations, reuse may not be attractive option therefore recycling into different products is more appealing. One of the recycled products that can be manufactured is composite materials. In this study, sisal fiber has been used to reinforce the recycled waste PET to manufacture a composite material to use for diverse purposes. From the tests, the strength and energy absorbing property of the waste PET was increased with the addition of the sisal fiber enabling it to be used for load bearing composites applications.By using waste PET bottles, environmental protection will be achieved while the use of locally available sisal fiber will result in the manufacture of a cheaper but effective composite.
