Characterization of the Physical and Mechanical Properties of Surface Treated Pseudo-stem Banana Fibres-A Case Study of Uganda

Banana pseudo-stems are used for paper pulp and fibres but some are thrown away in spite of their potential for further value addition. The aim of this research was to characterize the physical and mechanical properties of pseudo-stem banana fibres. The fibers were surface treated with sodium hydroxide and characterized for linear density, elongation, and tenacity. The untreated fibers were also characterized for the same properties. The treatment caused a reduction of fiber linear density and an increase of fiber tenacity (specific strength).
