Competitive Advantage Limitations for Apparel Manufacturing Industries of South Africa: University Fashion Departments Perspective

  This paper is based on the Fashion Departments of South African universities ability to strengthen competitive advantage for the apparel manufacturing industries of South Africa.It aims to evaluate the qualifications of the Fashion Department academic staff critical for a broader Fashion Qualification Programmes to meet competitive advantage challenges of the apparel manufacturing industries of South Africa.Seven out of eight Fashion Departments were studied through triangulation.A survey form was developed and emailed to Fashion Heads of Departments.The results were analysed using graphs and tables.Information that would expose the anonymity of participating fashion departments of South Africa was concealed.Relevant literature, University websites and news papers were also consulted for data collection.The results outline that 54.1% of academic staff of Fashion Departments of South African universities does not have minimum qualification required to lecturer.The results show that 39.3% has Masters qualifications,and only 6.6% has PhDs qualifications.As a result, the results highlight shortages in amongst others,Clothing, Production and PhD qualification programmes within the Fashion Departments of South Africa.These findings highlight R&D challenges within South African universities with fashion departments.This results show that fashion departments of South Africa contribute to the competitive advantage challenges experienced by the apparel manufacturing for under a decade.This paper contributes to the body of knowledge regarding PhDs challenges within universities.It contributes to the body of knowledge on competitive advantage challenges in the apparel manufacturing industry.
