Precise Synthesis of End-Functionalized Liner/Star Conjugated (Block)Polymers for Integration of Functionality by Olefin Metathesis

Organic electronics are important emerging technologies, and conjugated polymers/oligomers exemplified as poly(p-arylene vinylene)s are promising semiconducting materials.Synthesis of structurally regular, chemically pure materials by development of new synthetic methods/methodology attracts considerable attention.We recently reported syntheses of defect-free, stereo-regular (all-trans),high molecular weight poly(9,9-dialkyl-fluorene-2,7-vinylene)s (PFVs), poly(2,5-dialkyl-phenylene-1,4-vinylene)s etc.by acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization.1 Since the resultant polymers prepared by Ru-carbene catalyst, RuCl2(PCy3)(IMesH2)(CHPh) Ru(1), possessed well-defined chain ends (as vinyl group), an exclusive end-functionalization can be thus achieved by treating the vinyl groups with Mo-alkylidene catalyst/reagent, Mo(CHCMe2Ph)(N-2,6-Me2C6Hs)OCMe(CF3)22 followed by Wittig-type cleavage (with aldehydes).2-6 We thus demonstrated exclusive, precise syntheses of amphiphilic block copolymers including preparation of macroinitiators at the chain ends,3,4 and PFVs containing oligo(thiophene)s,5 chromophores6 in the both chain ends which exhibit unique emission properties.Moreover, we recently demonstrated efficient one-pot syntheses of end-functionalized conjugated not only multi-block,7a but also star (triarm)s polymers consisting of PFVs or the triblock copolymers by incorporation of tris(2,5-dialkoxy-1,4-phenylene vinylene) (OPV) or terthiophene units as the middle segment.
