Newly Designed Tridentate Iron/cobalt Complexes for Ethylene Polymerization

The discovery of 2,6-bis(imino)pyridylmetal(metal =iron or cobalt) complexes was a breakthrough in late transition metalpre-catalysts for ethylene polymerization.1Subsequently, many researches have focused on modifying ancillary ligands or controlling the parameters of the catalytic reaction to enhance the stability as well as the ability of finely tuning the properties of obtained polyethylene.Considering the 14 electron characteristics of the most assumed active species, the key issue of designing late transition metal complex pre-catalysts is to achieve the suitable ligands.2We developed series of tridentate ligands for iron and cobalt complexes, in which the bulky substituted bis(imino)pyridines could efficiently enhance the catalytic behaviors of their metal (Fe or Co) complexes. Moreover, synergistic effects have also been observed in multi-nuclear complexes in our laboratory and others, binuclear complexes as well as multi-nuclear complexes3 have been studied.
