Condensation Polymerization Coupling Ring-Opening Polymerization--A Facile Method for the Synthesis of Poly(Ether Ester) Alternative Multiblock Copolymers
Multiblock copolymers possess the structure diversity that offers the opportunity for tailor-made polymers with a variety of properties.Poly(ether ester)s are typical multibiock copolymers that are commercialized, though they are synthesized by random condensation copolymerization.We present here a new method to synthesize poly(ether ester) alternative multiblock copolymers by melt polymerization of cyclic oligo(aromatic ester)s (COAEs) with dihydroxide-terminated polyether macroinitiators in a one pot process, via a Condensation Polymerization coupling Ring-Opening Polymerization (CPROP) mechanism.The CPROP can be applied to synthesize a variety of poly(ether ester) alternative multiblock copolymers, including poly(trimethylene terephthalate)-block-poly(tetramethylene oxide) (PTT-b-PTMO-b-PTT)n, poly(ethylene terephthalate)-block-poly(tetramethylene oxide) (PET-b-PTMO-b-PET)n, and poly(butylene terephthalate)-block-poly(tetramethylene oxide) (PBT-b-PTMO-b-PBT)n alternative multiblock copolymers, as presented in Figure 1-2.The structure of these multiblock copolymers was determined and confirmed by GPC and an improved quantitative 1H NMR.A two-stage polymerization mechanism is revealed: the ring-opening polymerization of COAEs by PTMO macroinitiator to form triblock copolymers at first stage, followed by the in-situ condensation polymerization of triblock copolymers to alternative multiblock copolymers at second stage.The obtained multiblock copolymers show good thermal stability with 5％ weight loss temperature around 340 ℃, and good mechanical properties.
