From One-Dimensional Polymers to Two-Dimensional Polymers: A Facial Strategy for Preparation Of Free-Standing Single-Monomer-Thick Two-Dimensional Polymers in Water

Recently, two-dimensional (2D) polymers have been attracted much attention because of their exceptional properties and promising applications.1 However, development of two-dimensional polymers is far behind those of one-dimensional polymers and three-dimensional polymers owing to lack of efficient and convenient preparation methods.2 In order to explore the specific properties of this kind of new material, much effort has been devoted to design and synthesize artificial 2D polymers. So far, three kinds of methods have been reported to obtain mono-layer or few-layer 2D polymers: (a) top-downexfoliation of layered covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and 3D layered single crystals, (b) bottom -up synthesis of monolayer 2D polymers on surfaces, and (c) individual free-standing nanosheets in solution without the aid of any interfaces.Recently, Benjamin King group and Dieter Schlüter group reported the synthesis of 2D polymers based on photo-polymerization in single crystals.3 However, in most cases, the preparation of such exfoliatable precursors is a great challenge because it requires that monomers must be aligned in a specific manner in single crystals to facilitate the photo-induced intraformational polymerization. What is more, the process oftop-down exfoliation may cause defects which will restrict its application. At the same time, there also have been a number of attempts to synthesize 2D polymers within a 2D confined space.4 But, the downside of this method is its tedious process of the transfer of nanosheets from interfaces.Kim et al.performed the fabrication of single-monomer-thick 2D polymers in organic solvent via covalent self-assembly and a thiol-ene clickreaction.5 Zhao and co-workers also developed a facile approach for fabrication of free-standing 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) by single-step solution-phase synthesis.6 This is the only two papers that reported the methods to synthesize freestanding 2D polymers in solution without the aid of any interfaces. However these two methods also suffer from some disadvantages, such as low efficiency and lack of universality. Therefore, the readily synthesis of independent single-monomer-thick 2D polymers in solution is still challenging.
