Zeolita A: a New Filler to Improve Mechanical Properties of the Fluoroelastomer FKM
FKM, a noble fluorinated elastomer, is mainly employed as sealing and coating material to produce o-ring, shaft seals, valve stem seals, gaskets and expansion joints because it shows high chemical resistance to many organic solvents and to high temperatures (up to 220 ℃).However, it shows poor mechanical properties, which can be improved by the addition of reinforcing filler as Carbon Black and Pirogenic Silica.As FKM is a high polar material, a low dispersion of the filler in the matrix is observed due to a low chemical compatibility between the filler and the elastomer.Since the cost of FKM production is high and it corresponds to important industrial applications, researches are constantly developed to find new filler materials enabling to improve FKM properties.In this study, several FKM samples have been prepared using Ca(OH)2 and MgO as activators and Zeolite A as a new filler.Zeolite A is a crystalline microporoussilicoaluminate compound (dimension of micropores from 3 to 5 (A)) that shows a moderate acidic character.The rheological properties of the uncured composite and the mechanical properties of the vulcanized compound, both containing Zeolite A, are evaluated and compared to equivalent samples containing classical fillers.One sample has been prepared using a mesoporous filler (MCM-41) to investigate the effect of the porosity size.This material presented the best results among all regarding the resistance to swelling when in contact with organic solvents.The Zeolite A confers significant increase in the mechanical properties of the parent compound.It is interesting to stress that rubber containing Zeolite A as filler has better processability properties when compared to ones containing usual fillers.
