Thianthrene-containing Organo-soluble Polyimide Films with Intrinsically High Dielectric Constants: Synthesis and Characterization

Polymer composite films with high dielectric constants (high-k) are highly desired in current high-performance energy storage devices 1.Among various high-k polymer composite films, those derive from polyimide (PI) matrixes and high-k inorganic fillers have attracted much attention both from the academic and industrial fields due to their excellent combined properties including high thermal and environmental stability, high mechanical properties and good processability 2.However, most of the current research on high-k PI composite films has been concentrated on the combination methodology of common PI film matrix (dielectric constant k<3.5) and high-k inorganic fillers, such as barium titanate (BaTiO3), graphene or graphene oxide (GO).Few researches have been focused on the development of high-k PI film matrix.Actually, it has been well established that, in order to achieve a specific k value for high-k polymer/inorganic composite films, a small increase for the k value of the polymer film matrix will lead to a significant reduction in the loading amount of inorganic high-k fillers. This is quite beneficial for the maintenance of physical properties of the high-k composite films because that the overloaded inorganic fillers usually deteriorate the mechanical or processing properties of the films. Thus,R&D for PI matrix films with intrinsically high k values has been paid increasing attention in recent years. As we know, the k value of one polymer is closely related to the molar polarizability and molar volumes of the substituents in the polymer chains according to the Clausius-Mossotti equation 3Substituents with high molar polarizability and low molar volumes usually endow one polymer high k value.Among various substituents possessing such features, nitrile group (-CN, molar polarizability:11 cm3/mol;molar volume: ~50 g/mol) 4 has been most widely adopted to develop high-k PI films 5However, the instability of nitrile in some extreme environments (high temperature, combustion, etc.) limited its applications in high-k components for energy storage.Recently, another class of substituent,i.e.sulfur has been focused in developing high-k polymers due to its intrinsic high molar polarizability (8 cm3/mol) and low molar volume (~60 g/moi) 4.Especially, the substituents containing cyclic sulfur components, such as thianthrene or thiophene have been thought to be efficient for increasing the k values of the polymers.
