Biomass Vanillin-Derived Polymeric Microspheres Containing Functional Aldehyde Groups
Polymers, especially polymeric microspheres containing aldehyde groups, constitute a unique class of functional polymeric materials.1,2 However, at present, the preparation of functional polymer materials with biomass resources is still insufficient. In this context, the contribution reports the first polymeric microspheres derived from a biomass, vanillin.3 It reacted with methacryloyl chloride, providing monomer vanillin methacrylate (VMA),4 which underwent suspension polymerization inaqueous media and yielded microspheres in high yield (>90 wt %).
