Mg and Al Complexes Containing a New Tridentate Amidinate Ligands: Highly Efficient Initiators for the Ring-opening Polymerization of ε-Caprolactone
Polyesters constitute a branch of renewable and biodegradable plastics that are currently receiving significant attention both in industry and academia.1,2 Recently, a series metal complexes containing bidentate, tetradendate, NNO-tridentate and NNN-tridentate have been reported towards ROP of cyclic esters.Among them, the latter NNN-tridentate has demonstrated an interesting feature in which the arm of the quinolinyl group can coordinate with the rare-earth metal to increase the sterics and coordination sites of the ligand, creating a single active site nature to initiate the polymerization of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL).3,4 Therefore, we have synthesized a series of tridentate amidine ligands Ar-N=C(Ph)-N(H)-Qu (Qu =8-quinolyl)(Ar=2,6-di(Me)Ph (L1), 2,6-di(Et)Ph (L2), 2,6-di(i-Pr)Ph (L3), 2,4,6-tri(Me)Ph(L4), 2,6-di(Et)-4-(Me)Ph (L5).Reactions of these ligands with C2H5MgBr afforded the bimetallic magnesium bromide complexes (C1-C5), while the treatment of these ligands with AlMe3 in toluene gave the product of dimethylaluminum complexes (C6-C10).All of Mg and Al complexes were fully characterized by 1 H/13C NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis.Solid state structures of complexes C2, C5 and C6 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction technique.Both aluminum complexes and magnism complexes could show good activity for ring opening polymerization of caprolactone with or without BnOH as coinitiator.
