Synthesis of 7-Arylimino-6,6-dimethylcyclopentapyridyl Nickel Complexes and Their Behavior Toward the Ethylene Polymerization
Studies of late-transition metal nickel complexes pre-catalysts in ethylene polymerization have seen a significant rise in the emergence of α-diiminonickel complex precatalysts.1 Modifications of existing α-diiminonickel complexes have been focused towards higher activities of the catalytic systems and better properties of the obtained polyethylenes,2 meanwhile alternative models of nickel pre-catalysts have also been developed including 8-arylimino-5,6,7-trihydroquinolylnickel3 and 9-arylimino-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrocycloheptabpyridlynickel,4 performing high activities toward ethylene polymerization in all cases, and can distinctively improve the catalytic performance and the properties of the obtained polyethylenes by finely tuning the framework backbones. The success of these models inspired us to synthesize the 7-arylimino-6,6-dimethylcyclopentapyridine derivatives and the corresponding nickel complexes.Upon activation with either methylaluminoxane (MAO) or modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO), all nickel complexes showed high activities toward ethylene polymerization;the obtained polyethylene possessed low molecular weight and narrow polydispersity.
