Collagen Self-Assembly: Effects of Temperature, pH and Ionic Strength
Type Ⅰ collagen, a widespread and preponderant protein in humans, self-assembling into the fiber with a repeatting D-periodic gap/overlap spacing, is the main organic building block of many biological tissues in vivo. The inherent properties of collagen including bioactivity, cell adhesion, biodegradability, high biocompatibility and self-assembling properties make it a preponderant and promising material in many scientific fields, such as materials science, biomedical, tissue engineering and biosensors.However,self-assembly mechanism is poorly understood.1-5 The basic study of the mechanism of collagen assembly has great significance for its future applications.
