Catalytic Hydrochlorination Of Acetylene To Vinyl Chloride Over Coconut Activated Carbon Supported Ionic Liquid

Polyvinyl chloride is manufactured via the polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) which is produced in industrial application mostly by acetylene hydrochlorination method owing to the coal-rich and oil-lack resource feature in China. The addition reaction of acetylene with hydrogen chloride is catalyzed by activated carbon supported mercuric chloride which is easy to sublime at the reaction temperature leading to the deactivation of the catalyst, and is highly toxic and dangerous in the circumstance.Mercury-free metallic catalytic system, especially gold catalyst 1-3, has been extensively studied as promising alternative catalyst following the theory about correlation of activity of metal chlorides with the standard reduction potential.4 For the purpose of optimizing the Au/C catalyst, a second cheap metal as catalyst accelerator was introduced, to decrease Au content, restrain the reduction of Au3+/Au+ to Au0 and inhibit the coke deposition on the catalyst surface, resulting in much better stability and longer service lifetime.
