FUNCTIONAL DURABILITY OF INTUMESCENT COATINGS-INFLUENCE OF TOPCOATS
Thick intumescent coatings are well known effective solutions for protecting steel against fire.In this study, a model intumescent coating mimicking that applied on offshore platforms, has been chosen and applied on steel.Mechanisms of action of this coating in term of fire protection were investigated, and its effectiveness was evaluated using specifically designed small scale furnace test. However, the durability of intumescent coatings in accelerated ageing conditions is never investigated, even if it is of primary importance to design a successful product. One part of the talk will thus be dedicated to ageing mechanisms elucidation, in particular when the coating is in contact with salted water. One potential solution (i.e.topcoats) to overcome ageing issues will be discussed. The use of a silane based topcoat, which shows very interesting results against salt exposure, will be discussed.
