THE IT INDUSTRY VIEW ON FLAME RETARDANTS
For the IT industry, just meeting legal requirements like REACH and RoHS is the baseline.Since more than two decades, voluntary policy instruments like ecolabels and public procurement have been equally strong drivers, to ensure market access, especially in Europe. These market instruments have led to that the absolute majority of the known IT brands have eliminated PVC in product covers, halogenated flame retardants in most plastic parts, some now also offer computer, displays and printer products with low halogen printed circuit board material. When unwanted substances are replaced, in the past, little attention was given to the eco toxicological properties of the substitutes, i.e.there was an obvious risk for regrettable substitution, not only costly but with no environmental gain.Unfortunately, eco labels as well as the public purchasing organizations have not been very helpful to ensure safe substitution. To improve the situation, select IT companies like Dell and HP have worked together with PINFA to improve the situation.
