SYNERGISTIC EFFECTS OF MELAMINE POLYPHOSPHATE ON AN ALUMINIUM DIETHYLPHOSPHINATE FLAME-RETARDANT EPOXY RESIN SYSTEM

  In this work, aluminium diethylphosphinate (AlPi) and melamine polyphosphate (MPP) were used to endow epoxy resin (EP) with good flame retardancy.The effects of AlPi and MPP on thermal and flame-retardant properties of EP were investigated by thermogravimeric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI) and vertical burning test (UL-94).The results showed that the minimum loadings of AlPi and MPP to reach V-0 for EP were 7 wt% and 15 wt%, respectively.In addition, the combination of AlPi with MPP at the mass ratio of 2∶1 could further reduce the loadings to 6 wt%, and the LOI value was significantly increased to 31.5%.It indicated that MPP had synergistic effect with AlPi on improving the flame retardancy of EP.
