MALEIC ISOCYANURATE CHARRING AGENT AND ITS FLAME RETARDANCY PROPERTIES FOR POLYPROPYLENE
A charring agent named MT was successfully synthesized by using tris(2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate (THEIC) and maleic anhydride (MAH) as raw materials. The chemical structure of MT was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, 1H-NMR spectra and elemental analysis.MT and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) were added to polypropylene as an intumescent flame retardant (IFR) system to enhance the flame retardancy of PP.The UL-94 burning test and limiting oxygen index (LOI) test results showed that 30 wt% loading of IFR and APP/MT=2∶1 could increase the LOI value to 35.2% and pass V-0 rating. The TGA curves suggested that the addition of IFRs could increase the char residue of PP/IFR composites and showed high thermal stability. The cone colorimeter test results indicated that adding IFRs to PP could reduce the values of pHRR and THR, which were 70.6% and 22.0%, respectively.
