FABRICATION OF LIGNIN-BASED INTUMESCENT FLAME RETARDANT FOR REDUCING FLAMMABILITY AND SMOKE RELEASE OF Poly(butylene succinate)
Despite no excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, polybutylene succinate (PBS) suffers high flammability, limiting its extensive applications. This work designs and synthesizes one lignin-based intumescent flame retardant, Zn-lignin, which then is used for creating flame-retarded PBS composites.Cone tests results show that compared with pristine lignin, Zn-lignin displays better flame retardancy on PBS.Moreover, adding less than 10 wt% of Zn-lignin reduces the peak heat release rate and smoke production rate by 52% and 11%, respectively, with respect to PBS bulk. This work provides a novel methodology for developing bio-based flame retardants and eco-friendly flame-retarded polymer composites.
