APPLICATION OF NOVEL POLYMERIC, NON-HALOGENATED FLAME RETARDANTS IN GLASS REINFORCED POLYCARBONATE
Glass fiber (GF) reinforced polycarbonate (PC), an ideal engineering plastic with good electrical insulating and impact properties, finds increasing use in electronic equipment housings and covers, brackets and structural parts, computer parts, etc. Many of these applications require the materials to meet the flame retardancy UL 94 V-0 rating.Current commercial flame retardant GF PCs from major suppliers only meet V-0 at thickness of 1.47mm or higher, especially when GF loading is high (30-50wt%).In addition, the flow of these highly filled GF PCs is very low.The present work has shown that polyphosphonates and poly(phosphonate-co-carbonates) are able to impart outstanding flame retardant properties (V-0 at 0.8mm), while providing high flow, high HDT, and good mechanical properties, thus enabling the use of highly filled PCs for thin parts where flame retardancy is required.
