THE INFLUENCE OF PHOSPHATE MODIFIED EXPANDABLE GRAPHITE ON COMBUSTION BEHAVIOR AND THERMAL STABILITY OF POLYETHYLENE
A tripolyphosphate (STPP) modified expandable graphite (EGP) was prepared and tried as additive of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE).Its influence on LLDPE combustion characteristics was investigated and compared with the normal expandable graphite (EG,intercalated with H2SO4).Results testified EGp showed better flame retardancy and thermal stability for LLDPE than the EG and the mixture of EG with STPP, and the combination of EGp with ammonium polyphosphate (APP, type Ⅱ) made the 70LLDPE/10APP/20EGP system present an improved limiting oxyen index (LOI) of 31.9% and UL 94 level of V-0.The synergistic efficiency was attributed to the formation of continuous and compact residual char.
