INFLUENCES OF THERMAL PROPERTIES OF MELTS ON BURNING BEHAVIOR OF POLYETHYLENE

In this paper the melting phenomena and burning behaviors of polyethylene (PE) in the cone calorimeter were studied. It was observed that the condensed phase is completely composed of physical melting phase and flowing melts soon after igniton. To explore whether the thermal properties of melts determine the shape of heat release rate curve with a peak value, the burning polymer was quenched for measuring variations of the heat of combustion (He) by oxygen bomb calorimeter and the heat of decomposition (He) by DSC.It was found that Hc increases with the proceeding of buring and Hd reduces significantly during later burning period.Hc/Hd initially maintains constant and rapidly increases during later burning period, according with the shape of HRR curve to a certain extent and explaining the formation of HRR peak value.
