EFFECTS OF CERIUM AND LANTHANUM PHENYLPHOSPHONATES ON THERMAL STABILITY AND FLAME RETARDANCY OF POLYCARBONATE NANOCOMPOSITES
Rare earth phosphonates, cerium phosphonate (CeHPP) and lanthanum phosphonate (LaHPP),were synthesized through reflux and hydrothermal methods.Their synergistic effects with decabromodiphenyl oxide (DBDPO) on the thermal stability and flame retardancy of polycarbonate (PC) were investigated.Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that CeHPP and LaHPP both had excellent thermal stability and decomposed at a high temperature, which matched the decomposition temperature of PC very well.Incorporating CeHPP or LaHPP into PC/DBDPO composite did not help to enhance the thermal stability effectively. However, with the introduction of CeHPP or LaHPP, the PC/DBDPO composites could pass the UL94 V-0 rating, and the limiting oxygen index (LOI) could be improved dramatically.
