IMPROVING THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AND FLAME RETARDANCY OF POLYPROPYLENE BY COVALENTLY ATTACHING POLYPROPYLENE TO FLAME RETARDANT WRAPPING CARBON NANOTUBES
Intumescent flame retardant (IFR) wrapping carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were successfully fabricated through in situ condensation polymerization, following grafted onto PP through a reaction with maleic anhydride polypropylene (PPMA).With the incorporation of functionalized carbon nanotubes (FCNT), the mechanical properties of PP were improved while elongation at break was maintained because of strong interfacial adhesion. The flame retardancy of binary FCNT composites was improved and higher than that of PP and the same content of binary CNT/PP composites. The peak release rate (PHRR) of 5FCNT/PP composites was reduced by 60%, which was attributed to the protection of CNTs from IFR and the formation of better char with the combination of IFR and CNTs.
