A MESOPOROUS SiO2-GRAPHENE HYBRID AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE FLAME RETARDANCY OF EPOXY RESINS
A one-pot hydrothermal synthesis was used to obtain a novel SiO2-graphene (SiO2-GNS) nanohybrid from tetraethylortho silicate and graphene oxide to improving the dispersion of graphene in polymer matrix.Subsequently, the graphene nanohybrid was incorporated into epoxy resin (EP) to prepare specimens for investigation of their flame-retardant performance. Results show that the incorporation of the as-prepared SiO2-GNS nanohybrid into EP resin obviously increases the thermal stability and flame retardancy, compared with those of neat EP.Specifically, the peaks of the heat release rate and total heat release of the modified EP resin with 2.0 wt% SiO2-GNS decrease by 29.5% and 7.9% of those of neat EP resin, respectively. These attractive features of EP/SiO2-GNS nanocomposites are attributed to the barrier effect as well as the labyrinth effect contributed by SiO2-GNS in EP resin.
