STUDY OF AMMONIUM POLYPHOSPHATE-TIO2 NANOCOMPOUND IN INTUMESCENT FLAME RETARDED NANOCOMPOSITE COATING
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a kind of common colourant in paint and coating. Our work has revealed its synergistic effect with Ammonium polyphosphate (APP) in the waterborne flame retarted coating. With well dispersion of TiO2 nanoparticles in APP, APP-TiO2 nanocompound has been applied and the fire resistancy of the coating has been improved observably. The flame retardant mechanism was investigated by means of cone calorimeter (CONE), Thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).TGA and XRD data verify that TiO2 nanoparticles can react with the decomposition product of APP and titanium pyrophosphate is produced. The high thermal stability of titanium pyrophosphate prevents the further oxidation decomposition of the char residue. As a result, more stable char layer on the surface favors the barrier of heat and oxygen, and the underlying material is proteced effectively.
