Bangladesh Tea-Status of Current Production and Research and Future Development Plan

Introduction of tea in Bangladesh The early history of Bangladesh tea is integral to that of the history of the North-East Indian tea.The period 1827-1857 is very important in terms of beginning of tea in this Sub-continent in general and in present Bangladesh region in particular.Experimental, rather demonstrational tea plantation started in the present-day Bangladesh territory in the early 1840s.Actual cultivation began both in greater Chittagong and Sylhet districts at the fag end of this period. One Mr.Sconce, the then District Collector of Chittogong first received some tea seeds of Assamica type and some plants of China type from the Calcutta Botanical Gardens and pioneered tea plantation at Chittagong. The journey of commercial cultivation of tea in Bangladesh dates back to mid-eighteen fifties in the British Era.The first tea plantation established in Sylhet was at Malnicherra in 1854 that still exists as an estate entity. Thus tea plantation anchored in greater Sylhet district, the prime tea area in Bangladesh (Zaman, 1989).
