Current Status of Tea Industry, Tea Research and Future Development in China
1.Introduction of tea industry in China 1.1 The rapid growth of tea industry The change of tea plantation area is broadly divided into three stages in its development since 1949.The first stage is the rapid expansion period from 1949 to 1978.During these 30 years, the plantation area increased from 154.7 thousand hectares to 1048thousand hectares, an increase of 5.77 times and an average annual growth rate of 6.28％.The second stage is from 1979 to 1999, during which the Chinese tea production got rid of the extensive growth track of increasing production by expanding plantation area, and entered a new era to improve the economic benefit by enhancing the unit yield level and developing famous tea.In this stage the plantation area was basically stable around 1050 thousand hectares.The third stage is from 2000 to now, the tea industry has entered a new seedtime of high quality, efficiency, ecology and safety.During the past decade, the tea plantation area is increased from 1089 thousand hectares to 2550 thousand hectares, an average annual growth rate of 6.76％.It accounts for 47％ of the worlds total tea plantation area and ranks the first in the world (Chart1).
