Tea Research in India

In India, tea is grown in a wide amplitude of climatic variables, at latitudes from 8°12/ to 32°13/ North and altitudes ranging from near sea level in Assam to 2414 m (7920 ft) above mean sea level in the Nilgiris in south India (Hazarika and Muraleedharan, 2011).Currently, in India 580,000 ha is under tea cultivation.Production in 2012 was 1126 million kg, with a productivity of 1942 kg/ha.Indias tea production accounts for 24.9% of the world production.Almost 80% of the tea produced is black tea and the remaining 20% belong to green and other types of tea.
