Kenya Tea Industry Status and Challenges
Introduction The first tea seedlings (Camellia sinensis) were introduced to Kenya from India in 1903.Few private farmers established small tea gardens in Limuru (Central) and Kericho (Western) Kenya after the introduction of tea.The commercial cultivation of tea began in 1924 and remained an exclusive activity of the colonialists until 1956 when African farmers were allowed to start growing tea.
