Malawi Tea Industry: History, Current Status, Research and Future Prospects
1.1 History of tea in Malawi Tea was first introduced in Malawi in 1878 by the British missionaries.Commercial tea cultivation, however, was started in 1891 by Mr Henry Brown, a Scottish, who came to try out tea cultivation in Malawi after his coffee business had collapsed in Ceylon due to Coffee Berry disease. The first tea estate was planted at Thornwood, in Mulanje district but commercial cultivation of tea later spread to the adjacent Thyolo district.Tea was later planted at Kavuzi in Nkhata Bay in the northern part of Malawi.Later tea cultivation spread to Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The source of the planting materials was mainly seeds, collected by the early planters most probably from China and India.
