Sri Lanka-The Tea Industry, Tea Research and Its Future Development

Sri Lankan Tea industry-Current Status Tea Growing Areas in Sri Lanka:Based on elevation tea growing areas in Sri Lanka could be broadly categorized into up, mid and low country.The elevations defining these categories are : low country (0-600m), mid country (from 600m to 1200m) and up country (above 1200m).There are 46 Agro Ecological Regions (AERs) in Sri Lanka, tea plantations are distributed among 23 Agro Ecological Regions (AERs) (Anon, 2008).The basic features which define an AER are rainfall and elevation.There are about 221,967 ha of tea lands in the 14 administrative districts in Sri Lanka covering wet and intermediate zones.The tea extent in the up country, mid country and low country is 18.5%, 32% and 49.5%, of the total area under tea cultivation, respectively (Anon, 2012 (b)).
