Tanzania: The Status of Tea Production,Research and Future Development of The Tea Sector
Tea was introduced in Tanzania in 1902 on experimental basis in Amani, Muheza District, Tanga and Manow Estate in Rungwe. In Tanzania, tea is grown by both the smallholders as well as the estates sector. The two subsectors have the combined tea area of over 21,000hectare split almost equally between them.Despite the area being equally distributed, the contribution of the smallholders sector in terms of total production is just under 25%.This is mostly attributed to extremely low productivity of the smallholders tea subsector.
