Breeding and Matching Techniques for Two High-aroma Tea Varieties, Danxia-1 and Danxia-2 (Camellia sinensis)

Danxia-1 and Danxia-2 are two improved clonal varieties of high-aroma tea bred by scholars from the Drinkable Plants Institute of Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Agricultural Bureau of Renhua County, Guangdong Province, China. The two varieties are obtained by systematic breeding from natural mutants out of the wild population of white-fuzz tea in Renhua County. These two improved varieties feature high aroma of rose and orchid scents.Their buds are fat and hairy, with bud leaves containing rich components. Both the varieties are suitable for producing black and white tea.In order to facilitate their popularization and application, our research team developed key techniques for industrial seedling and processing of Danxia-1 and Danxia-2 by considering their features, advantages, and disadvantages easily encountered in the production process (e.g., low reproductive performance and bitter taste). These techniques effectively solve major technical problems in production of Danxia-1 and Danxia-2, including the coexistence of flower scents, high concentrations and bitterness in black and white tea products, difficult asexual reproduction, and pollution-free production.
