New Green Tea Cultivars Developed by the Makurazaki Tea Research Station of the NARO Institute of Vegetable and Tea Science

Almost 98% of tea production in Japan is green tea.The major green tea cultivar Yabukita was selected from seedlings by Hikosaburo Sugiyama in the 19th century and now forms approximately 75% of the tea gardens of Japan. However, the monoculture of Yabukita has caused many problems such as outbreaks of pests, over-fertilization,concentration of tea harvest time, and reduced variety of green tea taste.Consumer demands for green tea are for variety;therefore, tea farmers needed new cultivars that were superior to Yabukita. In this paper, we introduce four newly developed green tea cultivars, Shuntaro, Saeakari, Nanmei, and Sunrouge produced at the Makurazaki Tea Research Station of the NARO Institute of Vegetable and Tea Science (NIVTS).These cultivars will contribute to the future development of the tea industry in Japan.
